    A very atypical Frédéric Poincelet cover for a very atypical cassette: new technique for Frédéric, new flavor for Scum Tapes.
    What were you doing in the 90s? Most of the people I know were in bands, and sent their cassettes to “Ortie”, hoping to be reviewed by the likes of Larsen or Echo. Illustration was then provided by Frédéric Poincelet and Kerozen.
    Today, “Ortie” has long gone. Same thing for “reviews” and “hope”, so it’s back to basics: friends, music, drawings (and cassettes, surprisingly).

Laura, my niece from Saguenay did an Erasmus in Strasbourg last year. I went to visit her for a week-end. It was a good occasion to see Renaud, which I hadn’t seen in ages.
He’s got a house now, and the chilly Sunday afternoon was spent in their living room discussing music and friends while Alice prepared for a business trip, and Nicole and Brigitte played quietly. I casually proposed issuing a cassette, not excepting much: Renaud hasn’t made music since Luneville.
The thing with Renaud is that he collects everything. His house is full of well-stored cassettes, CDRs that even the concerned artists have forgotten about. Not to mention vintage toys, zines, you name it…
Out of the blue, he sent me these files. These songs were recorded for their second album. Remy produced them. For forgotten reasons, the album was never finished. They reunited in the 00s for a concert; they recorded an extra song, and offered the CDR to their friends/fans.
I’ve always loved Renaud’s music. Something in his melodies and the way he sings them gets me every time. This is surprising, as I’ve never listened to The Pastels or any of these sub-velvet bands that he’s in love with. There truly is something unique there.
I have to warn you: listen to these songs once, and they’ll be stuck in your head for days.
