September 4th 2016 was the first time I heard of K7 Straub.
Jean-Charles, Hendrik, Erik and Andy had already performed separately that night; all very good sets. It was a warm relaxed end of summer Sunday evening.
I didn’t know that K7 Straub was the name of their “super group”, and therefore had no idea that I’d have my mind completely blown away before they started.
I remember: stunned faces (everyone), a girl dancing on her back on the floor, shouting, and a supernatural level of excitement. The performers stayed focused the whole time. When they ended their set, I rushed to thank them. A lot of people did.
It turned out, they were pretty excited too: they knew. They told us to stay there, that they were doing another one, and just like kids playing, provided us with a second dose of sonic lava.
Missing from the recording is Hendrik’s double electric drill solo on the factory floor during the first part. Trust me, it blended very well with the other’s music.
Listening to it now, I’m impressed by how structured it sounds. The interaction between the players is amazing. It feels like a classic free jazz album, or magic.
It’s around that time that Joseph and Stéphane forbid me to go see any concert on my own. Go figure.
