Summer 2007. I spent a month in Berlin, Craig-listed a flat in Neuköln. Not much to do, till Guillaume moved to the city. He never left.
Weather was bad, so we started making music together.
It’s kinda blurry, but I remember that we decided on the Dust & Chimes name after attending a Six organs of admittance concert in an un-AC squat, and that the choice to cover the Cars song was made after recognizing it at the same time in a bar (8mm?) that I only agreed to join for one last drink and that we left when the sun was up.
I recorded vocals on my own every morning, rode my orange rented bike to Prenzlauer Berg in the afternoon to Cubase the songs “together” (my part consisted mainly of smoking ciggies on the balcony and being consulted on the results).
We usually called it a day in the middle of the night, with a celebratory Whisky Sour in the area.
Other memories: swimming in a nearby lake, techno club, hard-rock bar, record fair in SO36 and sloughing in sunny parks.
FFWD to 2021. I bought a Marvin Gaye compilation at Pop Culture, and as soon as “I heard it through the grapevine” started playing, the whole thing came back to me.
I don’t recall why I slept on these for 15 years, perhaps some of these tracks were deemed as unfinished at the time.
The years, and computers / hard drives crashes took care of that.
It’s my voice, I probably wrote a couple of midi parts and it perhaps was the first time that I recorded a guitar part, but don’t be fooled: it is mainly Guillaume’s music, he drove the whole project, even after I moved back to Paris.
For the sake of preserving his goth cred, I take full responsibility for the choice to cover Yvonne Elliman and Edgar Froese.
Is it finished? Is it an album? Scheissegal.
